Early Life & Background
Black Sheep emerged from Queens, New York, near the end of hip-hop’s formative 1980s. The duo consisted of Andres “Dres” Vargas Titus and William “Mista Lawnge” McLean. Dres became its principal rapper, while Mista Lawnge contributed as an MC and producer. They formed Black Sheep in 1989, entering a culture that had grown from its early-1970s origins into a broad musical movement with increasingly varied regional and stylistic identities.
The duo became associated with the Native Tongues, the creative circle identified with acts including De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and the Jungle Brothers. Native Tongues artists were not interchangeable, but they shared an openness to unusual samples, humor, individualism and alternatives to the harder conventions often attached to rap at the time. Within that setting, Black Sheep established an especially mischievous identity. Their name itself suggested outsiders who were comfortable resisting expectations.
That background is important because Black Sheep arrived when hip-hop albums were becoming expansive artistic statements. Rather than treating humor as a novelty, the duo incorporated comic timing, character sketches and verbal misdirection into carefully structured records.
Breakthrough
Black Sheep’s breakthrough came with the 1991 album A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. Released through Mercury, the record gave the duo national visibility and became its defining work. It eventually received a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
“Flavor of the Month” introduced Black Sheep’s self-aware attitude through a title that joked about the music business and the danger of being treated as a temporary sensation. “Strobelite Honey” added another memorable single, but “The Choice Is Yours” became the duo’s best-known recording. Its revised version reached the Billboard Hot 100 and developed into one of the most recognizable selections in the Black Sheep catalog.
The success was not simply the product of one catchy refrain. A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing presented the duo as album artists, using recurring jokes, shifting viewpoints and sharply delivered rhymes to sustain a full-length project. At a moment crowded with important New York releases, Black Sheep found room by sounding unmistakably like themselves.
Key Music
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing remains the essential starting point. Its principal singles—“Flavor of the Month,” “Strobelite Honey” and “The Choice Is Yours”—show different parts of the group’s appeal. The first is satirical and industry-conscious; the second is built around comic romantic storytelling; the third is direct, rhythmic and immediately memorable. Together, they demonstrate how Black Sheep could move between narrative humor and crowd-ready rap without abandoning its identity.
The duo followed its debut with Non-Fiction in 1994. The album included “Without a Doubt” and “North South East West.” It did not match the commercial impact of the debut, and Black Sheep subsequently separated during the mid-1990s. The contrast between the two albums has sometimes caused the later release to be overshadowed, but Non-Fiction remains part of the group’s original two-album run and documents its sound beyond the breakthrough singles.
Dres then pursued solo work. His album Sure Shot Redemption appeared in 1999, placing his individual career within the closing years of the era that had introduced Black Sheep. Although later activity extended the group’s story beyond 2000, the debut, its 1994 follow-up and Dres’s first solo chapter define Black Sheep’s principal 1980–2000 history.
Style & Influence
Black Sheep is generally classified as alternative hip-hop, but that label describes an approach more than a rigid sound. The duo relied on sample-based production, strong rhythmic loops and an alert sense of comic pacing. Dres’s performances could sound conversational one moment and tightly wound the next. Mista Lawnge’s contributions helped give the records the chemistry of a group rather than a solo rapper with incidental accompaniment.
The humor also carried an edge. Black Sheep could make fun of romance, status, record-industry fashion and even its own position as a newly popular act. That self-awareness distinguished the duo from performers who presented success without questioning it. Their records showed that a rapper could be technically assured, funny and skeptical at the same time.
Black Sheep’s Native Tongues association places the duo in a major lineage of inventive New York rap. Yet its strongest work does not merely imitate its peers. The group’s combination of punch lines, storytelling and accessible hooks produced a voice that remained identifiable within that larger collective.
Legacy
Black Sheep’s legacy rests most visibly on A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing and “The Choice Is Yours,” but it also reflects the range of early-1990s hip-hop. The duo demonstrated that playful records could still contain sophisticated writing and carefully shaped performances. Its work belongs to a period when humor, jazz-informed sampling, dance-floor energy and verbal competition could coexist on the same album.
The group’s relatively compact original run helped concentrate attention on its debut. Rather than disappearing into a large discography, that album continues to function as a snapshot of an adventurous moment in New York rap. On a classic-hip-hop playlist—whether assembled by an individual listener or programmed by an outlet such as FullblastRadio—Black Sheep offers an immediate connection to the wit and rhythmic confidence of that period.
Dres also remains central to how the group is remembered. As its lead rapper and later a solo artist, he carried the Black Sheep identity from the duo’s breakthrough into the end of the 1990s. The result is a history built not on a long sequence of hits, but on a distinctive voice, one major album and a song whose central phrase has remained part of hip-hop’s public memory.
Did You Know?
- Black Sheep was formed in 1989, making the group’s origins part of the 1980s even though its commercial breakthrough came in the following decade.
- The group’s title and album names repeatedly use sheep and wolf imagery, beginning with the name Black Sheep and continuing with A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.
- “The Choice Is Yours” and “The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)” are distinct versions; the revised recording became the duo’s signature hit.
- This Black Sheep should not be confused with the 1970s rock band connected to Lou Gramm, Julian Cope’s later project of the same name, or Jucee Froot’s 2020 mixtape Black Sheep.
